Wireless Internet FAQs and Troubleshooting
What is WiFi?
WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity. It's a radio wave technology which allows an appropriately equipped device to access the Internet within Morley Library without physically connecting to a network via Ethernet or phone line. In short, it's the ability to use the Internet without having to plug anything in.
Where is it?
Coverage is available on all floors of the Library, and should be equally strong in all public areas.
When is it available?
WiFi is available during regular library hours.
What do I need?
You will need a laptop or suitable PDA equipped with an IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network card. Newer laptops have wireless cards built-in. For most others, you can purchase a compatible card to plug in to your computer. (Cards are sold at computer stores.) Installation of the card and its associated software will vary depending specific computer, card and operating system. Your computer must be DHCP-enabled.
If sound volume is not turned off, you will also need a set of headphones to prevent music and other sounds from disturbing others.
What if I don’t own a laptop or PDA?
You will not be able to use the wireless network, but may still access the Internet using our hard-wired public access computers in the Computer Center on the 1st Floor. Morley Library does not supply or loan network cards, laptop computers or PDAs.
Is there a charge for this service?
No. Wireless access is provided as a public service free of charge on an "as is" basis with no guarantee and no warranty.
How do I connect?
In most cases, a connection will be automatic. You will need to do nothing more than open your browser and start surfing. Morley Library can not guarantee a wireless connection with all laptops and PDAs.
Can Library Staff help me configure or troubleshoot my wireless device?
Sorry, Library Staff can not accept the liability of handling your equipment. Everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.
Are there power outlets available?
There will be some power outlets available throughout the library for laptop use. However, we recommend that you fully charge your battery before coming to the library to use our wireless access. We cannot guarantee that an outlet will be available to you and running power cords across traffic areas is not permitted.
I can’t get a connection, but the person sitting next to me can. Why?
Not all wireless cards are the same. The quality of your card versus your neighbor's can be quite different.
What are the guidelines for use?
When using our network (whether WiFi or hard-wired in our Computer Center), you agree to be bound by the Morley Library OPLIN, Internet, WiFi and Computer Use Policy. Morley Library computers contain the NOLA Internet Information Management System (NIIMS) governing access. While Morley Library respects the intellectual freedom of its users, Morley Library is obligated to adhere to ORC 3375.351 and ORC 3375.352. Some ports and network services may be unavailable through the wireless network.
Web-based email may be accessed, but the Library’s wireless network does not allow for email using POP, SMTP, IMAP, etc. In addition, the wireless network does not allow for Telnet, SSH, FTP, VPNs and other services beyond web access.
How long does my connection last while I’m in the Library?
We have not implemented any sort of time limit; however, we reserve the right to do so at a later date.
Can I print from the wireless network?
No. To print, you should either save your document and print from home, or print from a hard-wired PC in our Computer Center. To print Microsoft Office documents in the Computer Center, save it to a disc.
Is the WiFi network secure?
Communications over a wireless network are less secure than through a hard-wired network. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone with a wireless device and appropriate software within approximately three hundred feet. It is recommended that you do not use such a network to transmit personal, financial, legal or other sensitive information. The wireless connection is used entirely at the risk of the owner.
Am I protected from viruses while using the Library’s WiFi connection?
No. Virus and security protection is the responsibility of the patron.
I can connect to the Internet, but how do I get help finding the information I am looking for?
If you have questions about accessing the Library’s reference databases or about finding specific information on the Internet, ask for assistance at the 3rd Floor Reference Desk.
For your own protection, laptops and PDAs must NOT be left unattended. Further, Morley Library assumes no responsibility for any laptop or other device left unattended.
